The resilience of children never fails to amaze me. When I was contacted by the lovely Jen about a pony portrait session for her daughter Isla and her beloved pony, Peter, I immediately sensed this would be something special. But I couldn’t have imagined just how meaningful it would become—until we found out Peter was being sold.
Originally, we had planned the session for the new year. But as life tends to do, plans shifted—and then Isla’s rapid childhood growth spurt gave us a deadline we couldn’t ignore. Suddenly, time was short, and Peter’s sale was imminent.
Despite less-than-perfect weather, we had one final day before Peter moved to his new home. And on that day, the magic between children and ponies came alive in the most beautiful way.
Isla is your typical pony-mad girl—happiest when she’s covered head-to-toe in mud, far more at home in wellies than in a dress. But what truly made this day special was the presence of a gorgeous, supportive friend who joined her. She brought calm, joy, and laughter, helping ease any nerves and creating a relaxed, natural atmosphere. Together, they made this equestrian portrait session something unforgettable.
As we explored the location, the rain held off just long enough for us to make the most of it. I was able to incorporate beautiful backdrops: a stunning arched structure, soft spring blossoms, and perfectly placed seating that framed Isla and Peter like something from a dream.
Throughout the shoot, Isla shone. Her bond with Peter, along with the comfort of having her friend by her side, proved just how much friendships and horses can shape a child’s confidence and joy.
As the wind picked up, we made our way back to the stables for some quieter, more relaxed portraits. These final images captured intimate moments—whispers between Isla and Peter, gentle hugs, and quiet reflection. We wanted to create images Isla could treasure forever, long after Peter moved on to his new home.
The wind howled and rain threatened to interrupt, but none of that mattered. When Isla was with Peter, the outside world faded away. It was just them, in their own little bubble.
